    What you do

    • Organise the students into seven groups – one for each atua in the whakapapa.
    • Students paint and decorate a paper plate to reflect their atua.
    • Tape a stick to the back.
    • Practise the whakapapa with each student reciting the part that relates to them, e.g:
      • Child 1: ‘Ka moe a Ranginui’
      • Child 2: ‘i a Papatūānuku’.
    • Perform as a series of mini plays.

    What you do

    • Tell the story of Hine Takurua rāua ko Hine Raumati. Ask students to listen very carefully so they can play a game afterwards that relates to the story.

    • Ka porohita te tūtū mai o ngā ākonga, ā, kotahi te ākonga kei waenganui o te porohita. Ko tā te mea e tū ana i waenganui, he whakaatu i tētahi mahi ka mahia i te haka – ko te takahi pea o te waewae, te papaki rānei i ngā kūhā, te hiki rānei o te/ngā ringa, te aha atu. Ko tā ērā atu ākonga, he whai i tāna mahi. Ka tukuruatia e te rōpū tāna mahi mō tētahi wā, kātahi ka oma atu ko tētahi atu ākonga ki waenganui, ka pā tōna ringa ki te ringa o te ākonga tuatahi, ā, ka hoki taua ākonga tuatahi ki te porohita. Ka haere ngā mahi a te ākonga tuarua mō tētahi wā, kātahi ka kuhu ko tētahi atu, ka kawe i āna mai i te haka hei whai mā te rōpū. Koinei te āhua o te mahi, ā, huri noa i te porohita.

    • Ka whakawai ia rōpū i ā rātou kupu me ngā mahi ā-tinana e rite ana. Ka huihui ngā rōpū ki te kawe tahi i te haka, ko tērā rōpū e hiki ana i tōna wāhanga o te haka, ko tērā e hiki ana i tōna. Kātahi ka whakaakona e ia rōpū tōna wāhanga ki ērā atu rōpū.
    • Matapakia te pai o te hono tahi o ngā wāhanga e whā kua tuituia. Āe rānei me paku whakarerekē ētahi wāhi kia pai ake ai te noho tahi, te hono tahi?

    • Ina tū te akomanga ki te whakawai i ā rātou mahi kapa haka, me hiki anō e ngā tamariki te pao me te haka, kia māia ake ai rātou ki te kawe i ēnei mahi i mua i te tū ki ngā hui tūturu, ki reira kawe ai i ēnei mahi.
    • Me tuku hoki te whakamārama, kāore i tua atu i te whakataukī nei hei whakamihi i ngā tamariki, i ngā rōpū, ki ngā whakaaro o te kaituku, kua eke ā rātou mahi a rēhia ki te tino taumata (hei tauira, i tētahi whakaaturanga kapa haka a te kura ki te whānau whānui o te kura). 

    Possible Assessment Opportunities

    Students can:

    • Create and perform a short a play based on the whakapapa of Tānerore.
    • Recall parts of the pūrākau using the ‘Roll and Retell’ activity.
    • Participate in an art appreciation activity. (Record the conversations.)
    • Work cooperatively to compose mini haka and collaborate as a whole group to put the haka ‘together’.
    • Compose beats and sounds for waiata and record.
    • Perform pao (girls) and haka (boys) at appropriate occasions.
