This is a summative assessment to gauge what students have learned throughout the duration of this 8 week unit. This assessment should take 90 - 120 minutes. This can be an open or closed book assessment, that is up to you. You can also omit any part of this assessment.

The first part of the assessment will be a listening activity. Play the below video of Living By The Stars twice to the exam room. Students will then answer the questions in the workbook.

At the 90 minute mark students will be given their kōrero subject and will have 5 minutes to prepare a 2min kōrero for presentation to the exam room.

  • What does kua whetūrangihia koe mean in relation to Matariki?
  • What is the name of the cluster of stars in the shape of a waka? Who is the rangatira of the waka?
  • What kāhui whetū is at the kei of the waka?
  • In which month does the waka set in the west?
  • Explain the meaning of “Matariki whanaungakore, Matariki tohu mate”.

Writing Task

Ngā tohutohu: Kotahi te tuhinga hei whakaoti māu i te reo Māori e pā ana ki TĒTAHI o ngā kaupapa e whai nei.

  • Me tuhi koe kia 250 kupu neke atu rānei.
  • Whakamahia te mahere whakaaro kei te whārangi 4.
  • Kia maha tonu, ā, kia whānui anō hoki ngā momo kupu me ngā momo hanga kōrero.

  • Matariki: Kōrerohia mai tētehi kōrero rongonui mō Matariki, me waihanga rānei i tāu ake kōrero.

Students will read the provided excerpt by Hōhepa Tuahine and answer the following questions:

Kupu Hou

Whetē - stare intently, staring fixedly

Whāereere - mother (of one’s children), wife

Speech Task

Give students a selection of topics to choose from for their kōrero tene. Once given a topic, they will have five minutes to prepare a 2 minute speech.
