Introduction

We will be looking at each month of the Māori new year to understand their unique characteristics. What did our ancestors do during these months? What was the environment like during these months? What season does each month fall into and how are these characteristics noted?

Once we understand the unique differences of each month, we grow our understanding a little more on how the environment and the time of the year influenced the activities of our ancestors.

Once we understand how our ancestors were influenced by the time and environment in their daily activities, we too can look to implement the same practices in our own lives.

Task 1

Students must select one month in the Māori calendar to present to the classroom. Living By The Stars Season 2 - Episode 6 Te Taiao (youtube.com)

Students will watch one of the following videos from Living By The Stars: Whakamoetau with Professor Rangi Mātāmua and explain to the class what is significant about the month they have selected or been given.
