Topic Introduction & Explanation
There are many topics we have covered over the last 8 weeks in relation to Matariki.
We have looked at the language of the stars through whakataukī, whakatauākī, mōteatea, haka and more.
We have studied timekeeping systems, lunar-stellar calendars and the movements of the sun.
We have taken an in depth journey through karakia and Matariki practices.
We have observed the political landscape, legislation and political movements that contributed to the establishment of the Matariki holiday in 2022.
We have learnt about the prominent names and figures of the Matariki movement.
We have covered a lot.
Today, we will be testing our knowledge on all of the topics and information covered over the last 8 weeks by impromptu speech.
Task
They must select one of the provided topics (you can create your own topics if you prefer).
Students will select a topic from the hat. Once selected, they will have 2 minutes to prepare a speech. Students must then stand and deliver their kōrero for 3 minutes.
Be sure to signal to the student when they have reached the 2:30 mark and again at 3:00 minute mark.
Students must include at least 3 language structures in the speech that you have been studying in class. This is for the teacher to decide.
