Kawenga Mahi
Task
Start this lesson with the Kahoot game before watching the Living By The Stars Video.
Students must make preparations for a Hautapu ceremony at school celebrating Matariki.
Once preparations have been decided, students will roleplay the Hautapu ceremony.
Here are some prompts to help you get started:
How will you organise the Hautapu at your kura?
Things to sort out:
- Who will do the karakia?
- Will there be a group of you?
- As you saw at the Official Hautapu ceremony there were kaikaranga - who will do this?
- What food will you prepare for the hautapu?
- Where will you perform the Hautapu? On a hilltop? On the field? On a roof?
- Where will you face to perform the Hautapu? To the eastern sky? To the western sky?
- What will be the order of karakia/karanga?
- Who will you invite to your Hautapu?
- What roles will your manuhiri play? Do they have a job to fulfil within the Hautapu ceremony?
- What clothes will you wear?
- How will you practice the karakia and karanga?
- What date will you perform the Hautapu? Why this date?
