Rangaranga Reo-ā-Tā

Rangaranga Reo ā-Tā is the term for a structured approach to pānui and tuhituhi. In this activity you will find an information page about the programme, how to access PLD and frequently asked questions. There is also a reflective practice activity.

Hihira Weteoro (Phonics Check)

A suite of aromatawai tasks has been developed alongside the teaching and learning content of Rangaranga Reo ā Tā for Tau 0-3. These tasks are currently being trialled for psychometric purposes and will be available for kaiako to access and use in Term 1, 2025.

Rangaranga Pāngarau

The Rangaranga Pāngarau programme for Tau 0 – 8 is under development and will be made available to kaiako in Term 1, 2025. As preparation, this activity will support you to access Pāngarau online resources and order hard copy resources from Down the Back of the Chair (DTBOTC).

The aromatawai activities aim to support kaiako with their aromatawai approaches and practices for use in everyday teaching.

Te Marautanga o Aotearoa the redesigned national curriculum celebrates the unique cultural identity and learning of mokopuna in years 0 to 13 learning through te reo Māori. It incorporates a vision and principles for the revitalisation of te reo Māori underpinned by tikanga and mātauranga Māori.

It provides kaiako with a cohesive curriculum structure. It aims to help leaders and staff develop teaching and learning programmes that deliver learning described in Wāhanga Ako so:

mokopuna experience consistent quality teaching and learning programmes and learning success, and
leaders and staff are clear about quality evidence-based teaching and learning and aromatawai approaches, practices and methods that could effectively meet the learning, progress and achievement needs of all mokopuna.

Rangaranga = structure
ā-tā = the term in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa (2008) referencing pānui and tuhituhi

Rangaranga Reo ā-Tā is the term that relates to learning to read and write in te reo Māori and focuses on Ngā hua whakaako (scope - what needs to be taught), te raupapa whakaako (sequence - the order in which the scope should be taught), and te wā whakaako (pace - when the scope should be taught). It is an element of Te Reo Matatini specifically related to learning to read and write in te reo Māori.

Rangaranga Reo ā-Tā is a Ministry of Education initiative led by Cath Rau and Hūrae White, focusing on te reo matatini, curriculum development, and aromatawai. It aligns with the scope, sequence, and pace of Te Reo Rangatira in the redesigned Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

Rangaranga Reo ā-Tā

Phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds. It is vital in learning to read and write.

The phonics check aligns with aspects in the first three components of Rangaranga reo ā-Tā:

Te aroā weteoro me te aroā oromotu (phonological and phonemic awareness)
Te oro arapū ā-tā (alphabetic principle)
Ngā kūoro me te tautohu kupu (syllables and word recognition)

Questions for discussion

Discuss what is being assessed, how it is being administered and how data is being collected.
What explicit teaching activities do you already provide as rich learning for an ākonga in the first 20 weeks at kura? What activities do you need to do more of?
Discuss why you think this type of assessment is important in the progress of an ākonga learning to read and write.

The phonics check (hihira weteoro) will help kaiako focus on what ākonga need most to become strong, confident readers.

The 20-week check assesses the ability to distinguish sounds. An Auditory Phonological Assessment Tool (APAT) is being developed to support the 20-week phonics data collection and report. Both the (APAT) and assessment are new.
The 40-week check measures the ability to identify letters. There are two aims:
- To make sure those ākonga who need targeted support are making gains in their phonics learning.
- To provide data for National Monitoring purposes.
At 55 weeks, a further suite of assessments is recommended to identify whether subsequent teaching since the 40-week check has ensured all ākonga are progressing well in phonics related skills for successful pānui and tuhituhi. It will provide performance information on the more advanced and complex phonics development assessed at this developmental stage.

All assessments in Hihira Weteoro are currently being trialled for psychometric purposes. All tools and tasks will be made available for use in Term 1, 2025 supported by PLD.

Make It Count, the Government’s new maths action plan features three components – Curriculum, Workforce and Assessment. A new Years 0-8 maths curriculum will be introduced a year early, from Term 1 2025, with resources available to support teachers.

The Rangaranga Pāngarau programme is being designed and developed under the leadership of Dr. Tony Trinick, Tammy Gardiner, and Moko Cooper. It will be informed by the Pāngarau Wāhanga Ako and supported by print and online resources.
