Te kata a Tipuna ki a Toro

Nā Tehoa Ngaro
Nā Vaitoa Baker ngā pikitia

I tētahi rangi, i a Tipuna rāua ko Toro e parakuihi ana, ka tīmata te kōrero a Toro mō tōna hōiho, mō Wera.

He roro hipi hoki. I tērā rangi i mahue ake nei, i rongo anō ēnei taringa ki tōu waha e hāmama ana, e kangakanga ana ki tō hōiho, he upoko mārō koe ka tahi, he upoko kōhua koe ka rua!" Ka kata a Tipuna.

He aha tōu mate?"

Ko Toro, "Ko te pōkokohua hōiho rā, a Wera. Pai kare! Mea i a au taku pū, kua oti kē ia te whakawhata hei mīti mā ngā kuri."

Tā Tipuna, "E hika! He aha te mahi a Wera i kōrero pēnā rawa koe mōna? Nā noa nei koe e waiata ana i ōna painga." E rua haora nei au e omaoma ana i muri i a ia, huri rauna, huri rauna, hoki atu, hoki mai.

Ka mea a Tipuna, "E Toro e! Te āhua nei i tika tō kōrero mō Wera, he hoiho tino mārama ia. Me haere koe ka mea ki a ia, "E Wera!

Kāre hoki rāua i kite i a Wera e tū mai ana i te kēti, e mātakitaki ana i a rāua. Ka whakatītaha mai tōna upoko me te mea kei te pātai, "Eeii! He aha kē te mate o ngā tōkorua nei?"
