The story of Ngāti Rārua started with a hekenga that began in Kawhia at the turn of the 18th century. Ngāti Rārua joined with Te Rauparaha to leave Kawhia and travel south, first to Taranaki, onwards to Kāpiti and in and around the Early 1820s through to land in Totaranui/Queen Charlotte Sound.
