Te Waharoa Ararau and e-asTTle Alignment Tables for Te Marautanga o Aotearoa 2025

This resource provides guidance and alignment tables that are used outside of Te Waharoa Ararau and e-asTTle to help inform aromatawai for reporting.

There are two alignment tables that can be used by kura to understand how mokopuna are progressing and achieving in relation to the new wāhanga ako of the redesigned Te Marautanga o Aotearoa for:

Te Reo Rangatira (Tau 0-6)
Pāngarau (Tau 0-8)

The tables serve as an interim measure, to support aromatawai decisions while the new Aromatawai and Assessment tool is being developed and existing tools are being aligned to the new curriculum.

Levels (taumata) are now organised by tūārere (phase) and tau (year) for:

Ngā Kete Kōrero – a Levelling Framework that organises texts designed to support mokopuna learning to read in Māori into increasing levels of difficulty.

He Manu Tuhituhi – a Levelling Framework that organises texts designed to support mokopuna learning to write.

Ngā Kaupae o te Poutama Tau – developmental stages or levels used to track and support mokopuna progress in Pāngarau for number knowledge, strategies and mathematical language.

Example:

Kaiako may want to conduct a Pānui Haere check to assess mokopuna reading alignment with their Tūārere (Phase) and Tau (Year) in the redesigned Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. For example, if the mokopuna is Tau 2, their reading level will range or show the mokopuna transitioning between Kete Harakeke (i) – Kete Kiekie (a) or at Kete Kiekie (a) or transitioning between Kete Kiekie (a) and (e).

Note: If the Tau (Year) for the mokopuna does not align with the Ngā Kete Kōrero progression range, this may indicate that the mokopuna requires additional support to develop their pānui skills.

Example:

Kaiako may choose to use a writing sample from the mokopuna and compare it to their Tūārere (Phase) and Tau (Year) in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. For example, for a mokopuna in Tau 3 their writing progression will typically range between Ka Whai Huruhuru and Ka Mārewa.

Next, kaiako should refer to He Manu Tuhituhi resource package to understand the tuhituhi skills the mokopuna is developing within the He Manu Tuhituhi progressions.

Note: He Manu Tuhituhi identifies the key learning that writers need to assist them in becoming a writer. It is based on a developmental approach, which is not restricted by the need to be at a certain point by a certain time but reach milestones with confidence and clarity about where the mokopuna have come from and where to next.

If a writer is late to immersion they may not be a Ka Oho writer, as they will have mastered some of the skills and strategies of an emergent writer but will need support in acquiring the specifics in writing in te reo.

Example:

Kaiako may want to use pāngarau tests to check that the mokopuna is progressing as expected. They can then align the pāngarau evidence or scores with the mokopuna Tūārere (Phase) and Tau (Year) in the redesigned Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. For example, if the mokopuna is Tau 4, their pāngarau progression should be at Kaupae 4 or higher.

Note: If the Tau (Year) for the mokopuna does not align with the expected pāngarau progression range, this may indicate that they need additional support to develop their pāngarau skills.
