Ko aku tungāne i taka tuatahi. Ko ahau i rere tonu i runga i te taiepa me aku ringa e totoro ana i aku taha hei hari haere i taku tinana.

He tuna! He tuna!" Ko Tiare tēnā. Kua mau i a ia he tuna iti nei.

Ko Takerei, e kauhoe ana i runga i te rōku hei poti. Ko ahau, kua mākū katoa aku kākahu, kātahi ka kuhuna ki roto i taku tarau kia kore e rapa ki aku turi.
E whā ngā tuna i mau i aku tungāne.

He rāpeti! He rāpeti!" Ko Takerei rāua ko Tiare tēnā.

Ka oma mātou ki te whai. Ā, ka toremi atu te rāpeti ki roto i tana rua, ko te whiore kau tā mātou i kite atu e ngaro atu ana. "Auē! Taukiri ē-e!"
Kātahi mātou ka huri kē, arā he rāpeti anō e rere ana!

"Ho! Ho! Ho!" Ko Tiare rāua ko Takerei tēnā. "Hī! Ha! Hī! Ha!"

Kua kihakiha ō mātou manawa. Kua tutū mātou, me te mātakitaki atu i te rua o te rāpeti.

"Engari tēnā! Ka mau koe i a mātou!" Kia kaha, kia mau rā a rāpeti e-e-i. Hī! Ha!"

Kua kore e mōhiotia atu he tāngata rānei, he aha rānei. Hei aha, ko te tae tonu atu ki te rāpeti e noho ana i roto i tana rua. Kua nui te oneone kua tū i a mātou. Kua pēnei i te maunga. Kua ngaro atu mātou ki muri.

Whiō! Whiō! Whiō! Whiō! Kua ngau tētehi mamae ki taku nono, ki aku waewae.

"He aha rawa te mea nei e ngau nei i ahau?" Ko ahau tēnā e whakaaro ana i roto i a au.
Whiō . . o . . o! Whiō . . o . . o! Ka ngau anō te mamae.
Rite tonu tō mātou tū ki runga, me te huri kino, kia kite ai he aha rawa te mea kino e ngau nei i a mātou. Ahaha! Ko tō mātou matua i runga i tana hōiho, me tana wepu, e wepu nei i a mātou.

"Anā! Anā! E tūpeke! Tūpeke! E oma anō! Tēnā, e oma anō!"

Ka ngau anō te wepu ki ō mātou nono me ō mātou waewae. Kua tūpeke mātou. Kua ngāngā ō mātou waha.

"Haere! E hoki ki te kāinga!" Ko tō mātou matua tēnā.

"Mahue te noho i te kāinga kori ai, ka haere kē koutou he tihoi haere. Kia tere!

Kāore a Takerei i hamumu.

I a ia e heru ana i taku māhunga, ka heke tonu aku roimata. Ahakoa kua kore kē te mamae, tangi tonu au. Kihakiha tonu taku manawa.
"Kāore koe e mōhio ana he hē ōu?" Ko tō mātou whaea tēnā.

Kāore au i hamumu. Kāore i whakaae taku ngākau he hē te haere ki te awa, he hē te haere ki te whai rāpeti.
