Matariki
Timi is in his room making a hīnaki for his class project. Taki, his doggy best friend, comes to visit him. Taki explains that Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades and is also the name of one of the stars in the cluster. Matariki rises in midwinter and formany Māori, it heralds the start of a new year. Iwi across New Zealand understand and celebrate Matariki in different ways and at different times. Matariki is the star that signifies reflection, hopeand our connection to the environment. There are 9 stars in the cluster, each with their own names and represent different things. There are many lessons we can learn from all the stars in Matariki. Taki teaches Timi the importance of Matariki and how it can guide him in his project.
